Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. There is a lot going on this week with crunch games in nearly every league along with various cup competitions offering up a plethora of excitement.
The highlight of the week must surely be the Women’s League Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City in Sheffield. Tickets are only £10 and it offers an excellent opportunity to hit two grounds in a day with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and maybe even Chesterfield within striking distance assuming the game finishes in normal time. Burnley v Tottenham is another Saturday lunchtime fixture that could provide the first half of a groundhopping double with Accrington and Colne nearby if you so choose.
I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would prove impossible with a preview for every game! I will still leave all the details in a list below the previews though so that you don’t have to rely on the maps if you don’t want to.
As ever, do check your own travel arrangements before setting off. I haven’t always checked if return legs are do-able so getting home safely is your look out! If you are inspired to go groundhopping by the guide do let me know. Oh, and feel free to share far and wide with anyone who may be interested. Have a great week.
Midweek Map (Tuesday: Red, Wednesday: Yellow)
Weekend Map (Saturday: Blue, Sunday: Green, Saturday Early Kick-off: Purple)
Tuesday 19th February 2019
7.45pm Rochdale v AFC Wimbledon (League One)
A huge game for The Dale sees them facing League One’s bottom club Wimbledon. Rochdale sit only one point above the relegation zone following a disappointing home defeat to Coventry and with Wimbledon representing the easiest 3 points of the season on paper a slip-up can’t be afforded. While Wimbledon struggle to get goals, their defence has been good of late and will take some breaking down. Expect a tense atmosphere.
7.45pm Altrincham v Spennymoor Town (National League North)
Following on from their draw at home to Bradford PA last weekend, Altrincham will be looking nervously over their shoulder at the chasing pack lying just outside the play-offs. They will be hoping to make use of their game in hand here, though they might wish they weren’t facing fellow play-off hopefuls Spennymoor, who have won five league matches in a row. The return fixture finished 4-4 back in August.
7.45pm Widnes v Everton (Liverpool Senior Cup)
Liverpool Senior Cup action as Widnes face Everton’s reserves. The Toffees are the most successful club in the competition’s history while Widnes have never lifted the trophy.
7pm Sheffield United Women FC v Manchester United Women FC
Sheffield United continue their run of home fixtures against the top teams in the Championship against, arguably, the best of the lot. Having lost out narrowly to Charlton and Tottenham, will they be able to turn their fortunes around here?
Saturday 23rd February 2019
12.15pm Arsenal Women v Manchester City Women Bramall Lane (Women’s League Cup Final)
The game of the weekend is the League Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester City at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane. These are the top two sides in the WSL and it promises to be a brilliant match. Defending champions Arsenal go into the game knowing the crowd will probably lean towards a City side that they haven’t defeated for nearly two years.
3pm Wigan Athletic v Ipswich Town (Championship)
A similar situation here for Wigan to the one Rochdale find themselves in on Tuesday. At least The Latics have the relative comfort of a five point cushion on the drop zone. Ipswich represent cannon-fodder this season and if Wigan want to keep their distance on the sides below then they must ensure they win this game. They’ll be as confident as they can be, given as how they are one of only three sides to have lost to Ipswich this season.
3pm Blackpool v Oxford United (League One)
Party time at Bloomfield Road after the club was placed into the hands of receivers by the High Court. This will likely lead to a points deduction, although few Blackpool fans will care as the receivers look to now sell the club to new owners. Crowds have been down this year as part of a protest against owner Owen Oyston, though not entirely clear at this point, it is looking as if those fans will be returning to the ground on Saturday to produce a jubilant atmosphere. Oh, and by the way, they’re playing Oxford, but that isn’t important.
3pm Stockport County v Maidstone United (FA Trophy Quarter Final)
Stockport are lining up another National League scalp and Wembley is just around the corner. This is County’s biggest game in a while, even if promotion remains the main aim. Hopefully, a bumper crowd will be in to cheer them on over a side who defeated Salford in the last round.
3pm FC Halifax Town v Havant & Waterlooville (National League)
Predictably, Halifax v Aldershot finished goalless. After following that lacklustre display with defeat at Chesterfield, Halifax have now gone nine hours without a goal and eight matches without a win. Havant occupy the final relegation spot and will leapfrog Halifax with a victory here. It is getting serious for the Shaymen.
3pm Gateshead v Wrexham (National League)
Wrexham have a new lease of life with their third manager of the season and have climbed back up to second in the table, with the potential to go top if they win their game in hand. They aren’t the only side riding the crest of a wave as Gateshead are mounting a serious charge for the play-offs. 3 points for either side here would be a huge statement of intent.
3pm Salford City v Eastleigh (National League)
No side has ever been promoted consecutively from National League North up to the Football League. Moneybags Salford (and Harrogate) have threatened to change that record at times this season, though a recent downturn in form may demonstrate why this league is so hard for newcomers. Can Salford stop the rot at home to Eastleigh? Four wins on the bounce for the visitors says they might struggle to.
3pm York City v Nuneaton Borough (National League North)
Consecutive wins!!! York have consecutive wins!!! Is the corner being finally turned by the Minstermen? Watson has been quick to quash such speculation, but he might struggle to keep doing so with a statement win against the basement side Nuneaton Borough.
3pm Warrington Town v Nantwich Town (Northern Premier League)
Warrington Town are on the march. After a huge win away to South Shields last weekend, only Farsley Celtic stand between them and the top of the league. The challenges won't stop coming for The Wire and fourth place Nantwich will be a huge test of their title credentials. A win here is a must if the visitors want to stay in the conversation for first place.
3pm Ossett United v Morpeth Town (Northern Premier League East)
League leaders Morpeth take on Ossett in the game of the weekend in the Northern Premier League East. United have got unbeaten in 2019, only conceding once in that time. Morpeth last tasted defeat comparatively recently on January 5th. Both teams will expect to win, and if Ossett can turn over the top side, they will be well placed in the play-off race.
3pm Prescot Cables v Atherton Collieries (Northern Premier League West)
A parallel fixture in Northern Premier League West. This time sixth hosts first and Prescot, who haven’t kept a clean sheet since Christmas, will be hoping to defeat a side who haven’t conceded in the last eight hours of football.
