Weekly Preview: 26.03.19-01.04.19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. This week sees the welcome return of the top two divisions following on from the international break. It should be said though that it is still very enjoyable seeing our national team being good at football, I just wish that they could play more times over the weekend to offset the lack of quantity that the league so adeptly provides!

On a personal note, I visited my 50th football ground as I took in Barnet v Harrogate at The Hive Stadium. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable game aside from a coach load of Eton students populating the away end and doing no favours to Harrogate’s posh town reputation. On the weekend, I went to watch the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield. It was wonderful to see so many legends rolling back the years, especially the likes of Dida, Pirlo, Kaka and Cafu for AC Milan. A strangely sedate crowd enjoyed the spectacle and raised around £1 million for Liverpool’s Charity Foundation in the process. The highlight of the afternoon had to be the not-especially-friendly last-ditch lunge which Traore expertly executed within minutes of coming on, a Steven Gerrard last-minute winner earned more valuable points for the nostalgia hunters in the crowd as well!

This weekend sees a big game at the top of the Premier League between Liverpool and Tottenham, likely played out in front of a slightly more raucous crowd than the one I was a part of on Saturday! You aren’t getting a ticket for that though, so you should go and see the real game of the weekend between Atherton and Radcliffe. There is only a point separating the sides as they head to the weekend and with Ramsbottom and Runcorn just behind, both sides know it is a must-win.

In the Championship, Middlesbrough versus Norwich promises to be a brilliant game. I have no particular allegiance in the Championship this year, but I can’t take my eyes off the title race. It is essential viewing, as Sheffield’s dramatic victory over Leeds proved a fortnight ago. That game, like so many at this level, could have gone the other way so easily. Both sides are also at home this weekend, ensuring that Yorkshire will be the centre of attention for The Championship this Saturday.

As ever please make sure you stress test your own travel plans and that you can definitely get tickets before you travel. Games you wouldn’t expect, such as Harrogate v Salford, find themselves at sell-out at this time of year so make sure you don’t get stung! Please like, share, and let me know what you think of the blog. I remain receptive to any and all feedback. Happy groundhopping!

Highlights this week

Tuesday 26th March 2019

7.45pm Doncaster Rovers v Bristol Rovers
Doncaster haven’t won in their last seven games and that abysmal form has seen them slide out of the playoff places at a crucial time of the season. On the other hand, Bristol Rovers are unbeaten in five and are one of twelve teams in League One relegation battle. Rover manager McCann has declared that the season starts now. Rovers (the Doncaster kind) will certainly be hoping so.
7.45pm Bradford (Park Avenue) v AFC Telford United
The demise of Bradford PA was greatly exaggerated. Having pulled in Spennymoor with an excellent win at Brewery Field last week Avenue will be looking to push away beaten Trophy semi-finalists Telford. If they find themselves in third come the end of the season, it will be very easy to get accidentally promoted.
7.45pm Colne v Prescot Cables
Last weekend saw Prescot’s playoff hopes terminally dashed in a 2-0 defeat away to Ramsbottom. Some solace however would have come from a third Liverpool Senior Cup final in a row. Here against Colne they will be looking to complete the double over their opponents, along with dragging them out of the playoff race as well.

Wednesday 27th March 2019

7.45pm Harrogate Town v Salford City
Last season’s promoted sides from the north face off as they battle for play-off position. The BT Sport TV cameras revisit Harrogate for the second time in 2019 and the hosts will be out for revenge on the team that has sat frustratingly just ahead of them for most of the past two seasons. Leyton Orient are looking good for the title so the big prize will now be the home play-off semi-finals that 2nd and 3rd place get to enjoy. Any ambitions of those positions for either side require a win in this game. Tickets will sell out for this game in advance so purchase ASAP.

Saturday 30th March 2019

3pm       Burnley v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Last season’s 7th place trophy win versus this seasons favourites for the award. Burnley sit precariously above the relegation zone this year and they will be hoping to see a return to the form which has recently deserted them. Wolves have tended to struggle against less illustrious opponents so this may be somewhat closer than the table suggests.
5.30pm Middlesbrough v Norwich City
The end of the season is a strange time where football fans will their bitter rivals to victory. Leeds and Sheffield United fans watching this Norwich fixture will be one such example.  Middlesbrough have their own ambitions to consider though and will be desperate to secure their own play-off prospects. Norwich have the best away form in the division and Middlesbrough have a below average home record. Another fascinating game in the Championship!
3pm       Barnsley v Coventry City
After their last minute winner against Walsall last week, Barnsley feel like a team with momentum (whatever that means). Coventry on the other hand are a team who seem to be careering from one crisis to another. I was surprised then, to learn that the Sky Blues were so close to the playoffs. I hope they can resolve their issues and remain in Conventry next season, but it is true to say that there would be a brilliant movie around a successful playoff campaign preceding the club’s demise!
3pm       Tranmere Rovers v Carlisle United
Two northern teams in and around the playoffs. There is significant buzz around Tranmere this season as they have managed to maintain the momentum of their play-off win last season. Both sides have pretty poor defensive records for their positions, so expect some goals in this one!
3pm       Altrincham v Kidderminster Harriers
Another game between play-off challengers. Altrincham are by no means secure in the play-off race and will be hoping to build upon their recent good form to solidify their position. Harriers have played more games than the sides just above them in the playoffs and so will require a win from this game if they want to find their way into the playoffs again this year.
3pm       Guiseley v York City
A Yorkshire derby and a game with lots riding on it for the home side. They remain precariously just above the relegation zone and require more points desperately. The heat has come off of York’s hot streak lately and they look to be easing into the end of the season before a vital off season where they look to rebuild the club, almost literally, at their new home.
3pm       Warrington Town v Gainsborough Trinity
Third place Warrington will have been sadder than most to see the demise of North Ferriby. South Shields’ loss against the villagers has been expunged from the records, meaning the Tynesiders leapfrogged their promotion rivals back into second. Gainsborough are not the side they would want to face off the back of such misfortune. Trinity are just outside the playoffs and will be desperate to make an immediate return to the National North. The plucky ‘wire’ will have to make sure they are right on song for this one.
3pm       Tadcaster Albion v Pontefract Collieries
If this game goes ahead it would be excellent if you could support Tadcaster following their recent flooding with your support. It is also a big top of the table clash as well!
3pm       Atherton Collieries v Radcliffe
First plays second. They are separated by a single point. This is the game of the week. Be there.

Monday 1st April 2019

7pm Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion
FA Youth Cup action as City face off against Albion. Tickets are dirt cheap for this one and the you will no doubt get to see some future stars on both sides in this prestigious competition. Monday night doesn’t get better than this!

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Northern Football Guide. After the drama of the F.A. Cup last weekend, it is the turn of the Women's F.A. Cup and the F.A. I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would pr...
