Hello and welcome to this week's Northern Football Guide. After last week's League Cup final, England Women are in the USA for the SheBelieves Cup. As a result, the top two levels of women's football are not in action this weekend. I have tried to flesh out the rest of the schedule with U23 fixtures that may be of interest, not least an opportunity to visit Anfield for £3 on Monday. It is also worth noting that all Manchester United U23 games at Leigh Sports Village are free to enter
We are approaching the final 10 games of the season across the divisions and there are a number of races going down to the wire. Not least in the Premier League where, according to the projections of fivethirtyeight, we might well be in for another Aguerooooooo moment. Whatever happens in the coming three months, we are fortunate to have two such excellent teams in the north fighting it out for the title.
This completely ignores the enthralling races at the top of the Championship, National League North and Evo-Stik Premier. In the National League North I struggle with the idea that at least one of Stockport, Chorley and Spennymoor won't be a National League club next year. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that all of the sides in the play-offs would survive well in the National League. Just look at the successes of promoted sides Salford and Harrogate against the struggles of Havant and Braintree this season. The strength of non-league football up north is of course due to a myriad of factors that would take far too long to write about now. What is certain however is that the Conference North is far removed from the division it was when it was founded in 2004 and is much more worthy of our attention as a result.
The Northern Railway strikes seems to have abated for the time being. Of course this could change rapidly so keep an eye out to make sure your intended mode of transport is still happening! The information in this guide is by no means conclusive and may be flawed so always double check it yourself and always remember to look both ways when crossing the road.
Finally, if a game doesn't have tickets, it does not seem to be the place to preview it here. For that reason you will not find details about the derbies taking place in Sheffield and Liverpool this week. You will however find excellent budget alternatives in both cities! If you have tickets to either of the big fixtures though I am eternally jealous. Have a great week.
Midweek Map (Tuesday: Red, Wednesday: Grey)
Weekend Map (Friday: Purple, Saturday: Orange, Sunday: Green, Monday: Brown)

Following on from big wins both sides will feel a lot easier going into this fixture. While you would suspect that the side joining Fulham and Huddersfield in the Championship next year will be one of those currently below these two, this is of course the Premier League and expectation makes a fool of us all with regularity. With Burnley's form it feels like they should be favourites for this one, but I would never put money on a Newcastle home defeat.
7.45pm Sheffield Wednesday v Brentford
I'm a sucker for a deal. The context of this game is dull, both sides are next to each other in the middle of mid-table. They will be Championship sides next year guaranteed. On the other hand, two well-matched sides go head-to-head and tickets are only £20 for adults around the ground! Groundhopping gold dust.

7.45pm Ramsbottom United v Colne
Two teams with play-off aspirations face off here and it promises to be exciting fare. Rammy are on the charge and have averaged over four goals per game over their last seven matches. It promises to be a stern test for Colne's usually solid defence.

7.30pm Dunston UTS v South Shields
Local cups are the cornerstone of non-league and this game offers something for everyone. South Shields win, and it is a way back to form in their league campaign, along with being a step closer to a trophy. If they lose, the self-doubt that is creeping in may take hold even further.
Wednesday 27th February 2019
8pm Manchester City v West Ham United
The quadruple has its first trophy acquired and with Liverpool faltering lately the league is feeling a lot closer than it ever might have when City trudged off at St James' Park a month ago. Fernandinho is injured however, will his absence prove to be the catalyst for another wobble? There are plenty of tickets available to this game for you to find out.
Saturday 2nd March 2019
3pm Doncaster Rovers v Charlton Athletic
Two playoff sides. Well matched. Lots to play for with Peterborough breathing down their necks. All the hallmarks of a great game!

3pm Harrogate Town v Dagenham & Redbridge
In many ways, the early season meeting between these sides in London marked the end to Harrogate's honeymoon in the top division of non-league. Since that defeat, Weaver's side have gradually slipped down the playoff ranks and now hang on by a thread. A first clean sheet since last October will have them believing that this game can herald the start of an end of season run to match the early season pace-setting. Also, if you are a fan of seeing a ground in transition, there are currently three new stands being erected at the ground for you to look at.

3pm Altrincham v Chester
Questions are being asked of the Chester bosses from some quarters after the side's struggles in recent weeks. This is perhaps a touch unfair when you consider the Chester injury list, but when has that ever got in the way of a good moan? Alty sit one place and four points above them, holding the playoff spot they want so desperately. This game feels like at least a mustn't-lose if they are to stay in the race for it.

3pm Guiseley v Southport
Three points out of 15 is relegation form. That is the grim reality facing Guiseley at the moment. Ashton are gradually reeling them in and unless something changes it will be consecutive relegations for the north-Leeds side. Southport sit seven points above them in the league and represent the sort of game they need to win right now with their form not looking much better.

3pm Stockport County v Spennymoor Town
Two of the big three in the division face off here. With the momentum behind Stockport's promotion challenge and their enormous fan base for this level, we could easily be looking at a crowd well over 5,000. The kind of game that makes me regret having a season ticket to a less interesting match and a girlfriend who wants me home for tea.

3pm Skelmersdale United v Glossop North End
Lets be clear, things are grim for both of these sides now and things will still be grim come 5pm on Saturday. But with five wins between the sides, and no home wins for Skelmersdale all season, this match offers the possibility of fleeting joy for someone at least.

8pm Liverpool U23 v Everton U23
Lately, it has felt like rocking horse poo would be easier to acquire than a ticket to Anfield. Not any more though as the mini-derby has been moved to the main stadium. Sure, Premier League 2 means nothing to anyone, but with the real deal happening at Goodison the day before, one half of Merseyside is going to spend the entirety of this game reminding the other about the derby result and that in itself will be essential viewing.
