Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the Northern Football Guide. There is only one story to focus on this week and that has to be the liberation of Blackpool FC from their unpopular owners, the Oyston family. The not a penny more campaign run by the fans has been brilliantly effective and now they are going to have the party they richly deserve. I am so excited that this celebration will be during the game against my late-grandfather’s team, Southend United. I can’t wait to dust off my Shrimper’s scarf and head to the Fylde coast to enjoy this special occasion (while also ticking off another ground on the way to 92).
Elsewhere it is a huge week in the National League as Salford host two home games against fellow promotion hopefuls in Sutton and surprise-package Solihull. Two wins in these games could well still save their faltering season in the unpredictable top tier of non-league. Elsewhere on Tuesday, Barrow host Leyton Orient while Harrogate look to end their barren home run against Bromley. A solid defence, and a couple of valuable goals have seen Halifax hit a modicum of form in time for the visit of FA Cup giantkillers Barnet.
Finally, there are some great cup games on offer in the midweek including an FA Youth Cup quarter final between Bury and Liverpool. Meawhile, as England’s women perform so admirably in the SheBelieves Cup over in America the Women’s Championship returns on Sunday. Sheffield United, Durham and Manchester United all hosting fixtures.
Please only take this as a guideline to your travels, as I haven’t stress tested my travel advice in most cases! Let me know where you have been on Twitter or in the comments below. I hope you have a great weekend of Groundhopping!
Maps
Tuesday 5th March 2019
7.45pm Barrow v Leyton Orient
While Barrow may be meandering towards a steady mid-table finish, their visitors are eyeing a return to the Football League. With Wrexham building a five point lead, they will need to win this to keep up the pressure. Expect a big away following, even with the long distance for a midweek game.
7.45pm Salford City v Sutton United
Are Salford still in a title race? With such a poor run of form and four teams above them they need to get a result here. It won’t be easy however, Sutton are in the hunt just outside the play-offs and tend to up their game for the bigger occasion.
7.45pm Farsley Celtic v Workington
After a surprise away defeat to Lancaster on the weekend, Farsley go into their game in hand with only the potential of staying one point behind the leaders Warrington. Workington are in 21st so this will need to be a convincing win for the home faithful.
7.45pm Scarborough Athletic v York City
North Riding semi-final action between two of North Yorkshire’s biggest sides. Both sides are fighting to stay in their play-off races, a win in the cup will help to build momentum. Hopefully there should be a good atmosphere between these historic rivals.
Saturday 9th March 2019
12.15pm Sheffield United v Rotherham United
More derby action in Sheffield as the Blades take on the Millers. Wednesday succeeded in stalling their city rivals on Monday night at Hillsborough but it will be a much taller task for Rotherham in the lunchtime kick-off. This game also matches well with a few potential double-headers.
3pm Blackpool v Southend United
The fans are returning. 12,000 tickets sold already for the official homecoming and excitement is building in Blackpool, only slightly tempered by the drubbing in Bristol on the weekend. Southend are trying to steer clear of relegation and have produced a wildly inconsistent form book to date. Anything could happen, either way the atmosphere will be special.
3pm Rochdale v Shrewsbury Town
Time is running out on Rochdale. They are five points adrift of safety and increasingly look in danger of returning to League Two after sacking their manager this week. Shrewsbury lie six points ahead of them in 17th and will provide an acid test for the club in their attempts to stay in the division.
3pm Carlisle United v Swindon Town
Two teams just outside of the play-offs face off here. Carlisle are only two points away from 5th place Exeter City so are well in the race, Swindon are now four points off in the race and will have this game down as a must win if they really have promotion aspirations.
3pm Salford City v Solihull Moors
Solihull have stolen Salford’s place in the title race. It would be an understatement to say that Moors’ run to the top has been a surprise to everyone outside of Damson Park. As it stands, the visitors will go into this game as heavy favourites. Hopefully Salford will take the underdog tag personally and produce the sort of performance that has too often been lacking since the turn of the year.
3pm Chorley v Kidderminster Harriers
Chorley’s lead is almost eroded. The leaders of the National North for almost the entire season have hit a poor run of form at the wrong time of the season. Stockport’s huge win against Spennymoor has added to the feeling of unstoppable momentum around Edgeley Park and a win here is essential as Chorley try to find a bit of form, or at least stay in touch with County. Kidderminster won’t be easy though with play-off aspirations of their own.
3pm York City v Altrincham
York are on a roll! Consecutive wins are giving the Minstermen the hope that their upcoming departure from Bootham Crescent will be with a winning team once again. Watson won’t talk about the playoffs, but if York can put together a good run of form then surely they can make up six points? 5th place Altrincham are a good barometer of how realistic an aspiration that is.
Sunday 10th March 2019
12pm Durham Women v London Bees
Women’s Championship action returns this weekend with Durham hosting London Bees. The three teams above Durham may be starting to build a gap on the North Eastern side, but they won’t have given up hope yet of competing. This match will be a must win though if they want to compete.
