Weekly Preview 12.03.19-18.03.19

Hello and welcome to another Northern Football Guide. This week there seems to be a strong western bias. Forgive me, but that is where the good games seem to be! I was getting excited about Spennymoor, but as happened so often last season, they have been rained off tonight against Bradford PA.

Jimmy Armfield passed away during the boycott.
Last weekend I had the privilege of attending the Blackpool homecoming game. From the moment of my arrival into the town, tangerine was visible everywhere. Too often, lower league games can feel like hidden occasions, with fans on the terraces more like a special interest group than a meaningful representation of their town. At Bloomfield Road though, it seemed as if the entire town had turned out to mark the symbolic return of their club. A day which has been four hard years in the making.

A packed Bloomfield Road takes in the game
From the arrival of the fans march, to outside the turnstiles, to the concourses, to the terraces, and no doubt to the bars of Blackpool that evening, the joy at having their club back was unconfined. The home fans did not stop singing throughout the game, even when Southend twice took the lead. Surely The only time the away fans could be heard was in the dying minutes, right before the emotive last-kick equaliser which swept their efforts away. It was a deserved, if shambolic, climax to the occasion.

Fans stream onto the pitch to celebrate the dramatic equaliser.

A word too about the beautiful tributes to those who had passed away during the boycott. Blackpool isn’t my club. This wasn’t my struggle. But any doubts I had about the toll this took on those who never got to see this day and their families were washed away by the families who carefully placed wreaths behind the goals. They stood there, overcome by emotion, embracing one another as empathetic applause and the cheered names of lost supporters washed down from the stands. My sincere and heartfelt condolences, congratulations and utmost respect goes to all of these people.

Tributes to the fans who passed away during the boycott.

In the week to come, there may not be a game as important as that one, and the FA Cup may be swerving our region again, but there are still plenty of games going ahead in the Women’s FA Cup and FA Youth Cup on Sunday. Wednesday also sees a return to Women’s Super League action after the fantastic success of England at the SheBelieves Cup.

As always, this is a guide only so please check your travel options before you head to a game. Also, watch out for postponements owing to Storm Gareth passing over this evening. Have a great week of Groundhopping and please share/comment/like/subscribe/tell your friends if you find this at all interesting.

Highlights This Week

Tuesday 12th March 2019

7.45pm Blackpool v Doncaster Rovers
After the incredible scenes on Saturday, Blackpool will be looking to build on the momentum of their last minute equaliser against Southend. The crowd may not be as raucous as on Saturday, but the steaks will be much higher. Blackpool are three points off the playoffs and Doncaster are holding that coveted final spot. A win here is essential to drag themselves into the race.

7.45pm Rochdale v Oxford United
Meanwhile at the bottom of the division, Rochdale take on Oxford. Both are in the relegation zone so expect a hunger games-style battle to death. Rochdale will feel confident after their victory over 20th placed Shrewsbury ended a string of defeats. A win here could see them pull level on points with safety.

Wednesday 13th March 2019

7pm       Liverpool FC Women v Chelsea FC Women
After two victories in the FA Cup, Liverpool find themselves on a run of four wins in a row, perfect form with which to face high-flying Chelsea then. It might not be enough on its own however. How about potential fatigue for the returning England players on the Chelsea side? Maybe the Reds will be in with a shot…

Friday 15th March 2019

7.45pm Doncaster Rovers v Barnsley
Doncaster are fighting for the playoffs. Barnsley are fighting for the league title. It is a South Yorkshire derby. Even with Doncaster’s poor form and Barnsley’s brilliant run, you know it makes sense.

Saturday 16th March 2019

3pm       Burnley v Leicester City
Burnley achieved what few sides have been able to this season when they scored two goals at Anfield last weekend. Pity about the four they let in. Wins for Cardiff, Southampton and Brighton made it a terrible weekend for The Clarets and now a home win will be vital. Meanwhile, Leicester may only be jockeying for upper mid table spots, but with Brendan Rodgers trying to put his stamp on the side, it will be interesting to see how they are developing.

3pm       Preston North End v Birmingham City
It would be fair to say that the second city derby did not go to plan for Birmingham last weekend. For them and hosts Preston though, the dream is not yet over. A win will be essential in the last chance saloon as the chasing pack tries to capitalise on collapsing Derby.

3pm       Accrington Stanley v Rochdale
Four winless games for Stanley has seen them well and truly dragged into the relegation picture. Thank god for winnable home games against apparent relegation fodder. Pity they are just round the corner and threatening a return to form. Expect another fantastic atmosphere at the Crown Ground.

3pm       AFC Fylde v Stockport County
Leg one of this FA Trophy semi-final takes place at Fylde. Both teams have pressing league matters on their mind, but nobody ever shrugs off a chance to go to Wembley, especially when both teams have worked so hard to get to this point. This should be an exciting set-up to the deciding leg next weekend.

3pm       Colne v Radcliffe
Two promotion hopefuls here. Radcliffe are keeping leaders Atherton honest and look generally secure with their playoff berth. Colne could just sneak in ahead of Mossley or Ramsbottom, but it is wins in games like this one that will determine their chances of achieving this.

3pm       Prescot Cables v Leek Town
As above, Leek are very much in the hunt for a play-off berth. Prescot would very much like to be. They might be able to claim their position in the race a little more confidently if they can pull off a win here.

Sunday 17th March 2019

12pm     Durham Women FC v Chelsea FC Women
2pm       Manchester City Women FC v Liverpool FC Women
Both of these games above are, potentially sizeable mismatches, however this is the FA Cup, these are the quarter finals and this matters enormously. Don’t avoid these games because of the probability of the result, go and see these games because of it. A spectacular afternoon is guaranteed if you can sniff out an upset!

12pm     Liverpool U18s v Watford U18s
FA Youth Cup action and a fantastic opportunity to visit Anfield for very little once again. After dispatching Bury with ease last week, Liverpool will be confident going into this game. Watford don’t field a side in the Premier League u18 competition, while Liverpool sit 2nd in the northern division. Again, is there a chance of a big upset here?

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Northern Football Guide. After the drama of the F.A. Cup last weekend, it is the turn of the Women's F.A. Cup and the F.A. Trophy to provide the cup drama this weekend. Everton Ladies have a huge challenge in the shape of cup holders Chelsea, while little Ramsbottom United's tie with AFC Fylde oozes cup magic in the Trophy.  There are two rounds of Premier League fixtures to enjoy, my pick of these perhaps being the Everton v Wolves game. I have no idea what is going to happen there, but I am confident it will be a very entertaining spectacle! In the Football League it is impossible to look past the massive clash of Leeds and Norwich. Not much good for ground-hopping neutrals, but probably one to book in to view on the television if you can get home from your chosen fixture in time! Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the £15 ticket deal at Bolton v Reading in midweek. Fantastic value in what is sure to be a scintil...

Weekly Preview 19/02/19-24/02/19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. There is a lot going on this week with crunch games in nearly every league along with various cup competitions offering up a plethora of excitement. The highlight of the week must surely be the Women’s League Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City in Sheffield. Tickets are only £10 and it offers an excellent opportunity to hit two grounds in a day with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and maybe even Chesterfield within striking distance assuming the game finishes in normal time. Burnley v Tottenham is another Saturday lunchtime fixture that could provide the first half of a groundhopping double with Accrington and Colne nearby if you so choose. I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would pr...

Weekly Preview: 26.03.19-01.04.19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. This week sees the welcome return of the top two divisions following on from the international break. It should be said though that it is still very enjoyable seeing our national team being good at football, I just wish that they could play more times over the weekend to offset the lack of quantity that the league so adeptly provides! On a personal note, I visited my 50 th football ground as I took in Barnet v Harrogate at The Hive Stadium. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable game aside from a coach load of Eton students populating the away end and doing no favours to Harrogate’s posh town reputation. On the weekend, I went to watch the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield. It was wonderful to see so many legends rolling back the years, especially the likes of Dida, Pirlo, Kaka and Cafu for AC Milan. A strangely sedate crowd enjoyed the spectacle and raised around £1 million for Liverpool’s Charity Foundation in the proces...
