Weekly Preview: 02.04.19-08.04.19

Hello and welcome to the Northern Football Guide. This week sees another pause to the top two divisions of women’s football as the national side plays a series of friendlies. The good news is that one of those friendlies takes place at the Academy Stadium in Manchester. The bad news? It is very sold out. It is a shame, as it seems unsurprising that the national side are able to command a crowd bigger that the 7,500-capacity ground. It is a shame that there are no other larger stadiums nearby that aren’t being used on the weekend.
Oh wait...

If you do want to watch football in that part of Manchester then don’t despair. There are plenty of seats available for the Man City v Cardiff game on Wednesday night including a handful at £15. You can’t say fairer than that! It should be a good game too, with Warnock’s men still sore from their extremely unfortunate defeat against Chelsea.

A look over the odds at any bookmakers will tell you that the north is currently home to the most intriguingly poised title race in the country (no not the Premier League) as a hair’s breadth separates Chorley and Stockport in National League North. Chorley have been at the front for most of the season, and will fancy their chances with a home game against Stockport still to come and plenty of experience throughout their side. However, Stockport look to have a much easier run-in than their opponents with almost all their games against bottom-half opposition. I think my money is on The Hatters to get the job done, though I would not be surprised to see both of them in the National League next season.

It is the time of year when fans start seeing the plain reality of their side’s prospects.  Gone is the early season optimism on so many terraces. Now comes the frustration, the angst, the torment as fans do what they can to evade the certainties of fate. If you want to avoid that, Man City are now selling FA Cup semi-final tickets on general sale from £30. Why would you go all that way though with a wide variety of fascinating clashes taking place closer to home?
As ever, this is just a guide. Ensure you have a ticket and a route home before you travel. (And if your route home involves killing an hour before you can get the last train home, get a pub sorted too). Let me know about your travels on Twitter, and please share the guide far and wide if you think it might be at all useful. Have a great week!

Highlights

Tuesday 2nd April 2019

7.45pm Middlesbrough v Bristol City
Fresh from a defeat to league leaders Norwich, Middlesbrough find themselves adrift of the play-off places and in danger of missing out. Their game in hand comes here against fellow hopefuls Bristol City in what should be a typically intense Championship battle. I am not predicting what will happen; the Championship makes fools of us all, but be sure that this is not one to miss!
7.45pm Workington v Mickleover Sports
“Bamber Bridge, we’re coming for you!” will ring out at this game from one end of the ground. But which one? The two sides in the relegation zone face off and it feels like a vital game for both sides, especially for home side Workington, who don’t get another chance against other relegation candidates after this game.
7.45pm Prescot Cables v Southport
The final of the Liverpool Senior Cup takes place at the home of the two-time defending champions Prescot Cables. Their fourth final in a row sees them face off against the side they beat 2-0 in the 2017 final. Home advantage should favour Cables, though with Southport comfortably mid-table in the league, don’t expect them to shirk the chance to get their hands on some silverware.

Wednesday 3rd April 2019

7.45pm Accrington Stanley v Sunderland
Stanley have quietly drifted badly towards the relegation zone and find themselves now in real bother. The League One relegation battle has many combatants, but Accrington are looking worryingly susceptible. They will be hopeful then, that Sunderland are suffering a major hangover from their penalty defeat at Wembley last weekend. A win here, or they are in serious bother.

Saturday 6th April 2019

3pm       Bolton Wanderers v Ipswich Town
Is there life in the Wanderers yet? A surprise win away to QPR last weekend saw McLaren shown the door by the London side and this is the perfect opportunity to back it up. Ipswich have been awful this year and will likely be relegated. If Bolton can beat them, then they will be within touching distance of safety. The futility of hope is cruel.

3pm       Carlisle United v Bury
Carlisle are just outside the playoffs. Just outside the playoffs is not a place that they will want to be though. Unfortunately for The Foxes, Bury are on the hunt for automatic promotion. With Mansfield close behind the automatic positions, The Shakers will not be giving anything away on their trip to the north-western outpost.

3pm       AFC Fylde v Eastleigh
3pm       Gateshead v Ebbsfleet United
Down at the bottom end of the play-offs in the National League is a peculiar half-life for football teams. Yes, Fylde and Eastleigh are in the playoffs, but nobody will fancy their chances of two away wins to get to Wembley. 5th feels like the bare minimum. This then, is a vital match for both sides as they jockey for superior playoff position. Fylde had been increasingly impressive before drawing away to Aldershot, while Eastleigh have the knack of securing results in any game.

Just behind those sides and outside the playoffs lie Gateshead and Ebbsfleet. Both sides have had serious ownership troubles in the past weeks, Gateshead having to leave their offices at the International Stadium over unpaid debts. They’ll be back there for their games though, and this one will be a vital fixture as both these sides seek to pick up the scraps from the sides just above them

3pm       Chorley v AFC Telford United
Must win for Chorley. Stockport are breathing down the pace-setter’s necks and the pressure is on. Chorley have bitter experience of the National League North play-offs from the past few years and will be determined to avoid those trials. A dip in form will not calm the nerves from the home support so a good performance here will be vital to build confidence for the tricky run-in.

3pm       Ossett United v Tadcaster Albion
3pm       Pontefract Collieries v Brighouse Town

Tadcaster make the short journey over to Ossett in this game between two playoff hopefuls in the Evo-Stick League 1st Division East. These sides sit 3rd and 4th in the form table with only defeats against front-runners Morpeth and Pontefract Collieries blemishing either record.
Speaking of Pontefract, they too are in action against fellow play-off hopefuls Brighouse, although their form is considerably the worst of the four. This year, league position prior to playoffs will be crucial, as the play-off winner with the worst league record at this level will find themselves not promoted. Nobody will want that.

Sunday 7th April 2019

1.00pm Middlesbrough U23s v Sunderland U23s
A local derby, hosted at the senior side’s stadium. I won’t pretend to know much about this game (including, but not limited to, ticket details) but it’s not as though you have anything better to do on a Sunday, right?

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Northern Football Guide. After the drama of the F.A. Cup last weekend, it is the turn of the Women's F.A. Cup and the F.A. Trophy to provide the cup drama this weekend. Everton Ladies have a huge challenge in the shape of cup holders Chelsea, while little Ramsbottom United's tie with AFC Fylde oozes cup magic in the Trophy.  There are two rounds of Premier League fixtures to enjoy, my pick of these perhaps being the Everton v Wolves game. I have no idea what is going to happen there, but I am confident it will be a very entertaining spectacle! In the Football League it is impossible to look past the massive clash of Leeds and Norwich. Not much good for ground-hopping neutrals, but probably one to book in to view on the television if you can get home from your chosen fixture in time! Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the £15 ticket deal at Bolton v Reading in midweek. Fantastic value in what is sure to be a scintil...

Weekly Preview 19/02/19-24/02/19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. There is a lot going on this week with crunch games in nearly every league along with various cup competitions offering up a plethora of excitement. The highlight of the week must surely be the Women’s League Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City in Sheffield. Tickets are only £10 and it offers an excellent opportunity to hit two grounds in a day with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and maybe even Chesterfield within striking distance assuming the game finishes in normal time. Burnley v Tottenham is another Saturday lunchtime fixture that could provide the first half of a groundhopping double with Accrington and Colne nearby if you so choose. I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would pr...

Weekly Preview: 26.03.19-01.04.19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. This week sees the welcome return of the top two divisions following on from the international break. It should be said though that it is still very enjoyable seeing our national team being good at football, I just wish that they could play more times over the weekend to offset the lack of quantity that the league so adeptly provides! On a personal note, I visited my 50 th football ground as I took in Barnet v Harrogate at The Hive Stadium. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable game aside from a coach load of Eton students populating the away end and doing no favours to Harrogate’s posh town reputation.
