Weekly Preview 09.04.2019-15.04.19

Hello and welcome to the Northern Football Guide for this week. We have a busy midweek this week and a brilliant Saturday of action, especially in the National League North. Chorley and Stockport continue their battle at the top with Chorley facing the tough assignment of a trip to play-off challengers Altrincham while Stockport host Blyth. This, along with a relegation battle at Guiseley and a 3rd v 4th game at Spennymoor, means that there is enthralling football on offer in almost every direction you look.

The Championship is starting to look like it might be Norwich’s to lose with the way the division is shaping up, with Sheffield United hoping to hold onto the other automatic place this weekend. For the third team in the race, it is easy to see a Leeds v Middlesbrough play-off semi-final followed by a potential Leeds v Aston Villa play-off final. The West Yorkshire side won’t feel that anything other than automatic promotion will reflect the season that they’ve had under Bielsa, however as a neutral, I am all in favour of this potentially enthralling gauntlet. Surely there would be no better way to acheive promotion?

There are three finals this week in the north. Well, two really, but they might as well hand the trophy out after the Manchester City v Chelsea Women’s FA Cup semi-final. The other semi-final definitely does not contain the same calibre of opponents and I imagine that the winners of the game at Academy Stadium on Sunday will feel very confident heading into the final. The other finals are the West Riding County Cup Final and the Manchester Premier Cup Final. Both clashes are very interesting and will be well worth a visit. A special highlight would be Ossett United lifting the West Riding County Cup in their first season.

As ever, please take this as a guide only. I don’t often check to see if routes back are possible on a Tuesday evening! If you do find this useful please share it with your friends who may be interested and share your experiences with me on Twitter (@TNFGuide). Have a fantastic week of groundhopping!

Highlights

Tuesday 9th April 2019

7.45pm Preston North End v Leeds United
After points dropped in Birmingham, Leeds will be rueing their inconsistencies in the new year once again. This game against Preston now becomes a must win but will not be easy. North End have still got an outside chance of the playoffs and already have a good home record to give them hope in this fixture.
7.45pm Accrington Stanley v Rochdale
Two sides sitting either side of the relegation watermark. League One is an absolute bunfight and it would be fair to say it doesn’t look like calming down any time soon. Stanley stopped their losing run last time out, but Rochdale have a slightly superior goal difference as it stands. Hopefully it won’t be rained off again!
7.45pm Prescot Cables v Leek Town
Prescot are four points behind their visitors who occupy the final playoff spot. After the narrow cup final defeat to Southport last week, Prescot will be hoping to erase the failed three-peat with a strong end to the league season.
7.45pm Ossett United v Guiseley
A final between two sides with very different league campaigns. Sweet escapism for the away side in this cup final may be the primary feeling, but they’ll be feeling safer now that they have nudged away from the relegation zone a little. Still, the narrative feels as if it is with first-season Ossett United. My money is on them to lift the cup.

Wednesday 10th April 2019

7.45pm Rotherham United v Aston Villa
The highlight of Wednesday night (ignoring the Champion’s League of course). Rotherham are still mired in the relegation battle, especially since Reading have pulled away. Aston Villa have got their mojo back this year and are making a strong case for the playoffs. Very different motivations, but a sure-fire cracker.

Saturday 13th April 2019

3pm       Accrington Stanley v Walsall
See above what I said for the game against Rochdale. Walsall sit level on points with Rochdale before the midweek fixtures are played. Accrington will need a win from at least one of these games. If not, they will be level on points with either side should they taste defeat.
3pm       Bury v Colchester United
Three defeats on the bounce are bad enough, but with catastrophic financial results being released this week, the wheels are in danger of falling off at Bury in a profound way. MK Dons have now leapfrogged them into the automatic spots and a win here against play-off hopefuls Colchester will be vital. Good thing then that the visitors are in a spot of dire form themselves.
3pm       Oldham Athletic v Swindon Town
Oldham and Swindon are in 11th and 10th respectively. However, both are in good form and find themselves only five and four points away from the last playoff spot. There is definitely room for them, but first they will need to win this game.
3pm       Tranmere Rovers v Milton Keynes
Bury are a dumpster fire of late and these are the two sides who are looking to capitalise. Milton Keynes are in pole position for the last automatic spot but they are also the baddies of football, and nobody is interested in seeing them do well. Tranmere are in the hunt for consecutive promotions and could only be a point behind with a win here. A must win.
3pm       Altrincham v Chorley
3pm       Stockport County v Blyth Spartans
Two huge games in the National North race. Chorley continue their harder run-in with a trip to Alty and without a win in their last two. Stockport could only draw as well last weekend, but will be expecting a win at home as they look to finish the season strongly. Neither opponent has lost in their last five so it won’t be easy for either title challenger.
3pm       Guiseley v Ashton United
Welcome to the last chance saloon Ashton. Four points from safety and a game away to the only team they can reasonably catch. If Guiseley can secure a win here they will feel confident of stopping the rot after two torrid years. Neither side is in good form, it will be interesting to see if anyone can muster up a performance worthy of the occasion.
3pm       Spennymoor Town v Brackley Town
The bridesmaids of the National North fight it out at Brewery Field in what will probably the race for third place. Given the meritocratic play-off structure in National North, that is not a prize to be shirked. Last season’s beaten play-off finalists Brackley go into this game with a run of form which demonstrates their experience at the top of this division over the past few years. Spennymoor just need a bit of life putting back in their season, this would be a good time to reanimate themselves.
3pm       Warrington Town v Scarborough Athletic
Two sides who are looking like falling just short of their ambitions. Warrington have started to look like the third of a three-horse race for the title, and Scarborough remain steadfastly just outside the playoffs. Can both sides be allowed to win?
3pm       Morpeth Town v Pontefract Collieries
First v second won't change much as the top of the Evo-stik East looks well spaced out at present. Ponte won’t view it like that however and perhaps a win here could make the end of the season a little more interesting than Morpeth’s 10-point lead currently suggests it will be.

Sunday 14th April 2019

3.30pm Manchester City Women v Chelsea Women
Two of the big three in the women’s game face off here for a place in the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley. Internationals have curtailed any real momentum in the club game in recent weeks but it isn’t so long since Chelsea fought back to earn a spirited draw at Academy Stadium in the league. Hopefully a huge crowd will be in for this one.

Monday 15th April 2019

7.45pm Curzon Ashton v Mossley (@ Hyde United)

Manchester Premier Cup Final between two well-matched sides. Curzon Ashton will have to be favourites being two divisions higher than their opponents, but Mossley have been competitive all season and won’t be going into a cup final to make up the numbers. A great way to spend a Monday evening!

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Northern Football Guide. After the drama of the F.A. Cup last weekend, it is the turn of the Women's F.A. Cup and the F.A. Trophy to provide the cup drama this weekend. Everton Ladies have a huge challenge in the shape of cup holders Chelsea, while little Ramsbottom United's tie with AFC Fylde oozes cup magic in the Trophy.  There are two rounds of Premier League fixtures to enjoy, my pick of these perhaps being the Everton v Wolves game. I have no idea what is going to happen there, but I am confident it will be a very entertaining spectacle! In the Football League it is impossible to look past the massive clash of Leeds and Norwich. Not much good for ground-hopping neutrals, but probably one to book in to view on the television if you can get home from your chosen fixture in time! Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the £15 ticket deal at Bolton v Reading in midweek. Fantastic value in what is sure to be a scintil...

Weekly Preview 19/02/19-24/02/19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. There is a lot going on this week with crunch games in nearly every league along with various cup competitions offering up a plethora of excitement. The highlight of the week must surely be the Women’s League Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City in Sheffield. Tickets are only £10 and it offers an excellent opportunity to hit two grounds in a day with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and maybe even Chesterfield within striking distance assuming the game finishes in normal time. Burnley v Tottenham is another Saturday lunchtime fixture that could provide the first half of a groundhopping double with Accrington and Colne nearby if you so choose. I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would pr...

Weekly Preview: 26.03.19-01.04.19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. This week sees the welcome return of the top two divisions following on from the international break. It should be said though that it is still very enjoyable seeing our national team being good at football, I just wish that they could play more times over the weekend to offset the lack of quantity that the league so adeptly provides! On a personal note, I visited my 50 th football ground as I took in Barnet v Harrogate at The Hive Stadium. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable game aside from a coach load of Eton students populating the away end and doing no favours to Harrogate’s posh town reputation. On the weekend, I went to watch the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield. It was wonderful to see so many legends rolling back the years, especially the likes of Dida, Pirlo, Kaka and Cafu for AC Milan. A strangely sedate crowd enjoyed the spectacle and raised around £1 million for Liverpool’s Charity Foundation in the proces...
