Weekly Preview 16.04.2019-22.04.2019

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. Easter weekend means that this is a bumper edition with 90 games across the north being covered. The other problem has been the sheer number of highlights in the schedule! We are getting to the point in the season where issues of promotion and relegation will be solidified across the leagues this week. Manchester United Women will wrap up their inaugural season with the title if they can win their two home games this week. It has been a fantastic first season for the club and I for one am looking forward to the beginnings of their rivalry with Manchester City Women from next season.

Meanwhile, Farsley and Atherton can also seal leagues titles before the end of the Easter holiday (Farsley have an Easter double on the cards if they can win the league cup tonight against Trafford). On the flip side, Bamber Bridge, Ashton United, Bradford City, Bolton, and Rotherham could all suffer relegation inside the next week. It is a time of mixed emotions, and more sides will come away disappointed than the select few who are privileged to win. With that in mind, I hope your next few weeks are full of excitement at the very least!

Last weekend I found myself on the wrong side of the Pennines at short notice and unable to attend the original game I had been hoping to go to. A quick check at the guide told me that the best game I could reach would be Warrington Town v Scarborough Athletic and so off I went to Cantilever Park, unsure what to expect.

From the start, it was end-to-end stuff, with both sides experiencing periods of dominance punctuated by promising counter-attacks. One such breakaway saw Warrington take the lead with a beautifully weighted ball across the box giving the impressive Tony Gray the perfect opportunity to find the bottom corner. Scarborough will, however, be wondering how they contrived not to score immediately after they went behind, with a succession of chances repelled by the Warrington defence. By the time The Wire secured victory with their second goal in the 90th minute, it felt like the home side were good value for the result.

A healthy crowd of over 500 watched the game, with a friendly atmosphere from both home and away supporters alike. The ground was full of character, I loved how the main seated stand was nestled between phone masts, demonstrating the thrifty nature required to thrive at this level!

This week, the stand out highlight of the week is the top of the table clash between Chorley and Stockport. I am so excited for this game, it pains me that I cannot attend. Both sides know they will thrive in the division above and will be desperate to avoid the lottery of the playoffs in order to get there. Stockport have unsurprisingly sold out their allocation for the game and Chorley are well on the way to achieving the same. Tickets are a little pricier than usual and must be purchased in advance from the ticket office in Chorley, but do try and get there if you can for one of the highlights of the season.

As ever, please check before you travel. This is a guide only and I haven’t stress tested my travel recommendations to any great degree! Tickets often sell out so make sure you have a ticket or can get one. If you find the guide useful please share, like and give me any feedback you feel inclined to. Happy groundhopping and a happy Easter!

Highlights This Week

Tuesday 16th April 2019

7.45pm Altrincham v Brackley Town
Altrincham’s impressive home form earned another scalp last week as title-chasing Chorley were seen off in a 5-3 thriller. They now have an opportunity to claim third spot from Brackley and hugely improve their playoff chances. An away victory in the reverse fixture back in December will add to Alty’s confidence.
7.45pm Farsley Celtic v Trafford
League Cup final time here and there is a very clear favourite. Farsley are top of the Evo Stik Premier and Trafford sit outside the playoffs in the Evo Stik. Celtic are on for the league and cup double and should solidify the first part here, but far stranger things have happened in cup finals! This game takes place at FCUM’s Broadhurst Park.

Wednesday 17th April 2019

8pm       Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur
The Manchester City octuple (including women’s and youth cup) is in its most precarious position so far. Spurs come into the second leg carrying a precious 1-0 lead knowing that an away goal for Tottenham will make this extremely difficult. City will surely be determined to exorcise the demons of last season’s defeat at this stage to Liverpool. You need a previous purchase to get a ticket, but if you can this game should be high on drama.

Friday 19th April 2019

12.30pm               Sheffield United v Nottingham Forest
Last week I asked whether Sheffield had done enough to feel confident of beating Leeds. Two draws in a week demonstrated they did not and all of a sudden, they feel very far back from their Yorkshire rivals. It is vital they get back on track here or it will be they who face the gauntlet of the playoffs.
3pm       Rochdale v Wycombe Wanderers
A huge win away to Accrington last week has seen Rochdale sneak out of the relegation zone by a point. Partially thanks to Wycombe, whose victory at Southend sent the Shrimpers into bottom four. Rochdale will be hoping that Wycombe don’t repeat the job here as it would surely plunge them right back into trouble.
5.15pm Sunderland v Doncaster Rovers
An exciting evening game in Sunderland between two sides with a lot to play for. The hosts are two points off automatic promotion with a game in hand on Barnsley. Doncaster are in the final playoff spot, but with Peterborough breathing down their necks, they know they can ill afford any slip-ups.
3pm       Tranmere Rovers v Forest Green Rovers
The two top teams in the League Two form guide face off here in a huge game for Tranmere. They are only two points off automatic promotion with two games to go, and will likely fancy themselves to sneak in following on from their huge win over MK Dons last week. With the current top two still to play, it would be an incredible achievement, but a win here will make them feel invincible.
3pm       Ashton United v Chester
3pm       Blyth Spartans v Guiseley
Hello Ashton and welcome to the last chance saloon. The gap to safety is now four points. It does not look likely to be breached. A home game against Chester is about as good as United could hope for. Chester have produced some truly horrific away results this year and another will be required to keep Ashton on the heels of Guiseley. The 19th placed side have a far tougher game against a Blyth side who are making a late run for the playoffs. Could we be set up for a tight finish at the bottom?

Saturday 20th April 2019

5.30pm Accrington Stanley v Luton Town
Accrington’s huge win against Walsall has helped to erase the defeat to Rochdale quickly around that Lancashire town. There may well be wild celebrations at this game as well. The visitors, Luton Town, look set to wrap up the title in this game and complete their massive comeback after sinking from the Championship to the Conference.
1pm       Chorley v Stockport County
The biggest game left of the season in any division. This game is set up so perfectly with the away side holding a slight advantage in the table. A win here for either side would be enormous. Chorley haven’t won in the last three, while Stockport have only won once so it would be fair to say nerves will play a huge role. Stockport won convincingly in the reverse fixture, though Chorley won the playoff matchup between these two sides last season. Tickets can only be bought from the Chorley club shop with no sales past 7pm on Thursday.
3pm       Bamber Bridge v Matlock Town
Bamber need a win here. They are two points away from safety with a game in hand over Mickleover in the place above them. Bamber’s win over Hyde followed 5 defeats on the bounce. Matlock, on the other hand, are also on a run of one win in their last six. If The Bridge want to save their season, this is the game where they will surely have to show that they can.
3pm       Ramsbottom United v Mossley
Rammy are holding in the playoffs by the skin of their teeth at the moment. This game against 7th placed Mossley will be crucial in defending their place. Mossley can go level on points with the home side should they win here and boost their playoff hopes. Colne will also be looking to cash in on any slips here with their valuable game in hand still to come. With 3rd-7th separated by four points, it is fair to say the playoff race in the Evo Stik First Division West is absolutely enthralling.
12pm     Manchester United Women v Crystal Palace Ladies
Depending on results in the week, this could be the game where United seal the Championship title. The perfect way to seal a brilliant first season in business will surely just be a precursor to many years at the top of the Super League.

Monday 22nd April 2019

3pm       Blackpool v Fleetwood Town
There isn’t a whole lot to play for here. Both sides are probably going to finish mid-table. This, however, feels more like a battle for the soul of the Fylde coast. Blackpool have seen two sides muscling into their territory while they have been through the doldrums of the Oyston’s ownership. Now though, they will want to regain their position as the premier club in the region. The process towards securing that begins with a win here over 90 minutes (and maybe 12 rounds*) with Barton’s side.
*If Barton is still in charge of course.
3pm       Harrogate Town v Gateshead
The surprise package of the early part of the National League season, Harrogate rose to the summit of the National League with victory over Gateshead back in September. Now, as we reach the end of the campaign, they will merely be happy to keep up their spot in the playoffs; a spot which has been put in jeopardy by a draw to Maidstone and defeat to Boreham Wood. With away games against Leyton Orient and Wrexham their only other fixtures, this has become an absolute must win for Harrogate.
3pm       Salford City v AFC Fylde
The joke this season has been that Salford only get good crowds if Manchester United aren’t playing. That may not be true in reality, however, custodians of Old Trafford would surely recognise this inexorable late-season as distinctly reminiscent of many Ferguson league wins. Orient have failed to cash in on their games in hand are struggling to turn simple results. With Solihull away still to come, there will surely be slip ups for Salford to capitalise on. Can they do their part and win this, their toughest fixture left?
3pm       Spennymoor Town v Chorley
3pm       Stockport County v Curzon Ashton
There is not a huge amount to say here that hasn’t already been said in the preview for the big one. Chorley have a much tougher Easter Monday fixture to contend with after the Saturday face-off but both sides have demonstrated they are capable of slipping up at unexpected moments. What drama it would be to see any Saturday advantage erased so soon.
3pm       South Shields v Scarborough Athletic
3pm       Warrington Town v Witton Albion
3pm       Whitby Town v Farsley Celtic
Farsley’s tricky trip out to Whitby could be where they secure the title and promotion back to the National North. It would be an impressive day on which to secure the title, with South Shields and Warrington both facing easier fixtures. Three points ahead with three to play feels like a sure thing to someone who has almost exclusively consumed this division via tables and spreadsheets. In Farsley and South Shields it will be a very different experience.
3pm       Ossett United v Pontefract Collieries
A potential playoff final precursor. In reality, this is about jockeying for position, will anyone be holding back?
3pm       Atherton Collieries v Trafford
Another potential title winning game. Atherton have been flawless since defeat to second-placed Radcliffe. Sealing the title here would be a remarkable display of resilience for the long-time league leaders.

Hello and welcome to the second edition of The Northern Football Guide. After the drama of the F.A. Cup last weekend, it is the turn of the Women's F.A. Cup and the F.A. Trophy to provide the cup drama this weekend. Everton Ladies have a huge challenge in the shape of cup holders Chelsea, while little Ramsbottom United's tie with AFC Fylde oozes cup magic in the Trophy.  There are two rounds of Premier League fixtures to enjoy, my pick of these perhaps being the Everton v Wolves game. I have no idea what is going to happen there, but I am confident it will be a very entertaining spectacle! In the Football League it is impossible to look past the massive clash of Leeds and Norwich. Not much good for ground-hopping neutrals, but probably one to book in to view on the television if you can get home from your chosen fixture in time! Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the £15 ticket deal at Bolton v Reading in midweek. Fantastic value in what is sure to be a scintil...

Weekly Preview 19/02/19-24/02/19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. There is a lot going on this week with crunch games in nearly every league along with various cup competitions offering up a plethora of excitement. The highlight of the week must surely be the Women’s League Cup between Arsenal and Manchester City in Sheffield. Tickets are only £10 and it offers an excellent opportunity to hit two grounds in a day with Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield FC and maybe even Chesterfield within striking distance assuming the game finishes in normal time. Burnley v Tottenham is another Saturday lunchtime fixture that could provide the first half of a groundhopping double with Accrington and Colne nearby if you so choose. I have made some changes to the shape of the article this week. Instead of previewing every game, I have picked a few particularly interesting games to highlight. I have also added in the Northern Premier League Division One East & West, this and further expansions would pr...

Weekly Preview: 26.03.19-01.04.19

Hello and welcome to this week’s Northern Football Guide. This week sees the welcome return of the top two divisions following on from the international break. It should be said though that it is still very enjoyable seeing our national team being good at football, I just wish that they could play more times over the weekend to offset the lack of quantity that the league so adeptly provides! On a personal note, I visited my 50 th football ground as I took in Barnet v Harrogate at The Hive Stadium. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable game aside from a coach load of Eton students populating the away end and doing no favours to Harrogate’s posh town reputation. On the weekend, I went to watch the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield. It was wonderful to see so many legends rolling back the years, especially the likes of Dida, Pirlo, Kaka and Cafu for AC Milan. A strangely sedate crowd enjoyed the spectacle and raised around £1 million for Liverpool’s Charity Foundation in the proces...
